| Abstract/Contents: | "The experiment was conducted in a 6-yr-old, commercial bermudagrass seed field near Calexico, Calif. Approximately 400 lb of N was applied annually in the flood irrigation water (5.5 ac-ft/yr). Experimental design was a 4 x 4 Latin square. Each plot measured 12 ft x 25 ft. Three fungicide treatments were applied using a CO² backpack sprayer equiped with a 3-nozzle ( 16 in. spacing), hand-held boom, Teejet TX-8 hollow cone nozzles, and operating at 30 psi. The single foliar application was made on 5 Apr (40 gal/A). Disease severity was determined by counting the proportion (%) of leaves with at least one rust pustule on an erect stem/stolon (6 to 9 leaves per stem). Disease ratings were made immediately prior to treatment (5 Apr) and at 7-day intervals following treatment (12, 19, and 26 Apr). Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and the Duncan-Waller K-ratio multiple comparison test. Moderate levels of disease were present at the first application and no significant differnces between treatments were detected prior to treatment, nor at any of the subsequent ratings. Improved fungicide performance would be expected if applied prior to infection. Earlier application would also increase coverage due to the presence of fewer seed heads, thus allowing greater penetration into the canopy. The disease rating method used was very labor intensive." |
