Abstract/Contents:"Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) has long been used to overseed warm season turfgrasses for winter color and improved trafficability. Turfgrass managers often outline golf course fairways with herbicides to provide a sharp, contrasting edge between the overseeded fairways and the dormant roughs. These same herbicides also are used to control annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) in dormant bermudagrass ( Cynodon dactylon L.) Annual bluegrass control in overseeded warm season turf is difficult at the least. In the following experiments, several herbicides are evaluated for annual bluegrass control and utility as an outlining treatment. In 1995-96, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of various herbicides on the establishment of perennial ryegrass. The trials were conducted at the Sandhills Research Station and the Raleigh Country club in established 'Tifway 419' bermudagrass. In the perennial ryegrass tolerance study, four herbicide application timings were used: eight, six, four, and two weeks prior to overseeding (PTO). Oxadiazon in the 0.67G and 2G formulations (2 & 4 lbs ai/A) and benefin 2.5G (2.75 lbs ai/A) were applied on August 21. Applications were made using a CO[2 backpack sprayer or a shaker can. Treatments using a water carrier were sprayed at a target volume of 32 gallons per acre through 8002 flat fan nozzles at 22-26 PSI. Overseeding, at the desired time interval after herbicide application, of a perennial ryegrass mixture (PhD-38.46% Regal, 38.46% Derby supreme, and 19.33% Gator) was at 20 lbs/1000 ft² utilizing a drop spreader. All plots were verticut in two directions prior to seeding to ensure good-soil seed contact. Experiments, to evaluate outlining with herbicides, used the same cultural methods for plot establishment. Herbicide treatments consisted of pendimethalin 60 WDG (1.5 & 3 lbs ai/A) and prodiamine 65 WG (1.5 & 3 lbs ai/A), applied in the above mentioned manner, at three timings, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after herbicide application. All experiments were split plot design with four replications. Experiments were evaluated for percent perennial ryegrass cover. Data were subjected to ANOVA using Fisher's protected 1sd at 0.05 level of confidence. In perennial ryegrass tolerance studies, there were no significant differences in percentage ryegrass cover, at any timing, for the two pound oxadiazon rate, in either formulation. (Two-31%, four-36%, six-40%, or eight-43%). Benefin treatments were not significantly different from nontreated, until the two week-prior to overseeding treatment that reduces ryegrass cover to 29%. Oxadiazon, at four lbs ai/A, was phytotoxic except at the 8 PTO rate (38%). In outlining studies, prodiamine treatments significantly reduced percentage ryegrass cover at any location, rate or timing, when compared to nontreated. Pendimethalin, at the three pound rate, significantly reduced ryegrass density at either the 2 or 4 PTO timings. Ryegrass control was not consistent between locations at any timing with the 1.5 lb pendimethalin treatment."
