Abstract/Contents:"Three studies were conducted at Lonoke, AR between 1994 and 1996 to determine the effect of prodiamine on the establishment and/or quality of seeded turfgrasses. Study I included planting three cool-season grasses often used for fall over-seeding ('Sabre' rough bluegrass, 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass and 'Medalist 8' perennial ryegrass blend) and applying prodiamine at 0.5, 0.75 and 1.5 lb ai/a at 30, 45 and 60 DAP (days after planting). In Study II, the same cool-season grasses were planted in the fall following spring applications of prodiamine at 0.5, 0.65, 0.75, 0.75 FB (followed by) 0.33 and 0.75 FB 0.75 lb ai/a. The fall planting date was September 21 for both studies. Seeding rates were perennial ryegrass 10 lb/10000 ft², creeping bentgrass 1 lb/10000 ft² and rough bluegrass 2 lb/10000 ft². All seeding was done in established common bermudagrass sod using a Ryan Mataway with a slit seeder attachment. Plots were mowed at 0.75 inches. Study III consisted of seeding into prodiamine treated soil following simulated winter kill of common bermudagrass. Simulated winter damage was achieved by applying glyphosate at 4 lb ai/a during the fall of 1995 and repeating the treatment in the spring of 1996 before seeding. Prodiamine rates for single applications were 1.0 and 2.0 lb ai/a in fall and 0.75 and 1.5 lb ai/a in spring. Sequential applications rates were 0.75 in fall FB 0.75 lb ai/a in spring and 1.5 in fall FB 1.0 lb ai/a in spring. Charcoal (6.7 lbs/1000 ft²) was surface applied in a split-block arrangement at the time of seeding. 'Cheyenne' bermudagrass (1 lb/1000 ft²) and 'Finelawn' turf type tall fescue (7 lbs/1000 ft²) were planted on May 1, 1996. The bermudagrass was re-seeded on June 18, and August 1. All comparisons are made with the untreated control. In Study I, perennial ryegrass and rough bluegrass were significantly injured by the 1.5 lb ai/a prodiamine rate applied 30, 45 and 60 DAP. Rough bluegrass was also significantly injured by the 0.5 lb ai/a rate at 30 DAP and the 0.75 lb ai/a treatment at 45 and 60 DAP. No significant differences in creeping bentgrass quality were observed due to prodiamine. In Study II, prodiamine applied in the spring did not affect the quality of fall planted perennial ryegrass, creeping bentgrass and rough bluegrass. In Study III, surface applied charcoal did not improve seedling emergence of bermudagrass or tall fescue. On June 28 there was no bermudagrass in any of the prodiamine treated plots while there was 65 to 75% bermudagrass cover in the untreated plots. At the final rating on August 27, after three bermudagrass plantings, the only bermudagrass stand (25 to 30%) in the treated areas was in the plots receiving a spring application of 0.75 lb ai/a prodiamine. Higher rates and sequential applications prevented the establishment of seeded bermudagrass. Tall fescue emergence was superior to common bermudagrass. At 28 DAP there was approximately 70% stand of fescue in the plots treated with 1.0 lb ai/a prodiamine in the fall. This trend continued through the 56 DAP rating. The onset of hot weather prevented any accurate mid to late summer ratings for tall fescue. Other treatment combinations prevented any significant tall fescue establishment."
