Abstract/Contents:"Project Habitat is a community relations program for utility companies who are actively promoting and fostering wildlife habitat in their utility rights-of-way maintenance programs. Wildlife organizations such as National Wild Turkey Federation, Buckmasters, and Quail Unlimited recognize the potential for millions of acres of utility rights-of-way that have to be maintained by removing all potential hazardous woody species on their easements. Studies conducted by Dr. George Hurst, Mississippi State University, show that the use of imazapyr to selectively remove hardwood vegetation on forest production acres can relese low growing herbaceous plant species. Utility companies often implement an integrated vegetation management program where imazapyr is tank mixed with other compounds to achieve total woody vegetation control. Dr. David Guynn, Clemson University, and Dr. Lloyd Hipkins, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, are currently evaluating the affects of these tank mixes on rights-of-way vegetation and their influences on species shift and biodiversity. As a result, the participating utility companies will have a better understanding of utility rights-of-way management for wildlife and an effective educational tool to aid in bridging the communication gap with concerned land owners."
