Abstract/Contents:"A field study was initiated in May 1996 to evaluate the efficacy of selected herbicide combinations for control of perennial johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense) and common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) tolerance. Herbicide treatments evaluated included MON 37555 at 0.031, 0.045, and 0.058 lb ai/A, alone, and combined with Roundup Pro (glyphosphate at 0.5 or 0.75 lb ai/A. Standard treatments included Roundup Pro at 0.5 lb ai/A plus Oust (sulfometuron) at 0.047 lb ai/A, Roundup Pro at 0.75 lb ai/A plus Oust at 0.023 lb ai/A and Plateau (imazameth) at 0.125 lb ai/A plus Roundup Pro at 0.5 or 0.75 lb ai/A. Treatments were applied to actively growing johnsongrass (15-30 inches in height) and common bermudagrass on 21 May. Treatments were applied to 5 ft. by 15 ft. plots using a CO²-powered bicycle sprayer calibrated to deliver 20 gal./A. Visual evaluations were made 1, 2, 3, and 4 months-after-treatment (MAT) for percent johnsongrass control and bermudagrass injury as compared to the untreated check. All treatments of MON 37555 applied alone produced less than 3.3% injury to bermudagrass throughout the duration of this study. All MON 37555 treatments when combined with Roundup Pro at 0.5 lb ai/A produced 3.3 to 8.3% bermudagrass injury which was significantly less than all other combinations at 1 MAT. All other standard treatments produced 25 to 38.3% bermudagrass injury at 1 MAT that diminished by 2 MAT evaluations. All injury in this trial was acceptable for roadside situations, except that produced by Roundup Pro at 0.75 lb ai/A plus Plateau at 0.125 lb ai/A which persisted through 2 MAT evaluations. Acceptable injury in Oklahoma from treatments of this nature should not exceed 40 to 50% and persist for no more than 4 to 6 weeks. All treatments of MON 37555 applied alone produced 53.3 to 65% johnsongrass control at 1 MAT. This level of control remained relatively unchanged throughout the summer. The addition of Roundup Pro at 0.5 lb ai/A significantly increased johnsongrass control between 81.7 to 85% (1 MAT) and 86.7 to 93.3% (4 MAT). These combinations also produced very little noticeable bermudagrass injury, a trait which is very desirable. Increasing Roundup Pro to 0.75 lb ai/A did significantly increase johnsongrass control (97.3% at 1 MAT and 99.7% at 4 MAT) when combined with MON 37555 at 0.031 lb ai/A, but not when combined with higher MON 37555 rates. The increase in Roundup Pro rate did produce a noticeable yellowing of bermudagrass. The standard treatments of Roundup Pro plus Oust produced 80% (1 MAT) and 86% (4 MAT) johnsongrass control, while Roundup Pro plus Plateau produced 85% (1 MAT) to 88.3% (4 MAT). All MON 37555 plus Roundup Pro treatments along with the standard treatments in this study produced acceptable (80% or better) johnsongrass control throughout this study. MON 37555 because of its apparent safety on the bermudagrass shows great promise for johnsongrass control in bermudagrass release programs."
