Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate herbicide tolerance in seeded turfgrass. The experiment was conducted on an Amarillo fine sandy loam soil with a pH of 7.6 and organic matter of 1.3%. The experiment was located at the Texas Tech Erskine Research facility in Lubbock, Texas. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications in a split-plot arrangement. Turfgrass species used were common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] pers. cv. U-3), native buffalograss (Buchloe dactloydes [Nutt.] Engelm.), blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis [H.B.K.] Lag. ex Steud.), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud. cv. Zen 100CS), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. Derby Supreme), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schrub. cv. Rebel II), and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Warm season turfgrass species (common bermudagrass, native buffalograss, blue grama, and zoysiagrass) were planted on July 13, 1994 and July 27, 1995. Seeding rates were 2 lbs./1000 ft² pure live seed (PLS), 4 lbs./1000 ft² PLS, 1 lb./1000 ft² PLS, and 2 lbs./1000 ft² PLS respectively. Cool season turfgrass species (perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass) were planted on September 19, 1994 and April 12, 1995. Seeding rates were 6 lbs./1000 ft² PLS, 6 lbs./1000 ft² PLS, and 2 lbs./1000 ft² PLS respectively. PRE treatments were applied within 24 hours after planting. PRE herbicides included isoxaben (1.0 lb. ai/A) + oryzalin (1.5 lbs. ai/A), prodiamine (1.5 lbs. ai/A) + oryzalin (1.5 lbs. ai/A), and dithiopyr (0.5 lbs. ai/A). POST hebicides were applied to warm season turf species 6 weeks after planting (WAP) in 1994 and 8 WAP in 1995. POST herbicides were applied to cool season turf species 4 WAP in 1994 and 10 WAP in 1995. POST treatments included imazaquin (0.5 lbs. ai/A), dithiopyr (0.5 lbs. ai/A), and 2,4-D (0.25 lbs. ai/A). PRE and POST herbicides were applied using a CO₂ -pressurized backpack sprayer which was calibrated to deliver 15 GPA at 30 PSI. Herbicide tolerance was based on plant injury as compared to the nontreated control. Visual injury where 0% represents no turf injury and 100% represents total turf necrosis was recorded 1 to 6 WAP for PRE treatments and 2 to 4 WAT for POST treatments, depending on turfgrass species. Treatment by turfgrass species by year interactions were significant. Herbicide treatments for each turfgrass species were evaluated for injury. Warm season turfgrass species exhibited no tolerance to PRE herbicides. With the exception of Kentucky bluegrass, cool season turfgrass species exhibited greater tolerance to PRE herbicvides. Cool season turfgrass species planted in September, 1994 exhibited greater tolerance to PRE herbicides compared to those planted in April, 1995. All turfgrass species exhibited greater tolerance to POST herbicides. Cool season turfgrass species exhibited less tolerance to imazaquin applied POST."
