Abstract/Contents:"Controlling sedges in turfgrasses can be difficult. In the southern US, several sedge species are common in turf. In North Carolina, nine species are commonly found. Turfgrass managers have difficulty with proper identification of the sedge species. Many cannot be identified without the presence of a seedhead. Because herbicides differ in their control of the various sedge species, proper sedge identificaion is necessary for control. Because misidentification is common, the proper herbicide is often not utilized. Green kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia L.) is one of the most common weeds in turf in North Carolina and Florida. In North Carolina, it appears to be spreading throughout the state. Green kyllinga is a perennial and is one of the most difficult weeds to control. It spreads rapidly and thrives under low mowing heights common in highly maintained turf. Four trials were initiated in 1995 to evaluate various herbicide treatments for control of green kyllinga, annual sedge (Cyperus compressus L.), and globe sedge (Cyperus globulosus L.). Three green kyllinga trials were established on two golf courses in North Carolina on hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. "Tifway 419" and "Tifgreen 328"). One trial was established in Florida for control of annual sedge in Tifway 419. Herbicide treatments in green kyllinga trials included halosulfuron at rates ranging from 0.031 to 0.062 lbs ai/acre in single and multiple applications, imazaquin (0.375 and 0.5 lbs ai/acre), imazaquin plus MSMA (0.5 plus 2.0 lbs ai/a), sulfentrazone at rates ranging from 0.125 to 0.5 lbs ai/acre, and two applications of MSMA at 2.5 lbs ai/acre spaced nine days apart. All other multiple applications were made at five weeks after initial treatments. Treatments for control of annual sedge included atrazine (0.75 lbs ai/acre) plus bentazon (0.75 lbs ai/acre), bentazon (0.75 and 1.0 lbs ai/acre), single and multiple applications of halosulfuron (0.031 lbs ai/acre), and single and multiple applications of sulfentrazone (0.5 lbs ai/acre). All applications were made with flat-fan nozzles in volumes ranging from 20 to 33 gpa applied from 20 to 26 psi boom pressure. In green kyllinga trials, sulfentrazone provided better control than other herbicides. Two applications of sulfentrazone (either 0.25 followed by 0.25 lbs ai/acre or 0.375 followed by 0.125 lbs ai/acre) gave complete control under very heavy green kyllinga populations. At termination of the study, nontreated checks averaged 1,013 shoots/ft². The addition of MSMA to imazaquin increased control from 5% to 76% in one trial. Multiple halosulfuron treatments at 0.062 lbs ai/acre provided 65% control. Two applications of MSMA applied nine days apart provided acceptable control in one experiment where green kyllinga populations were heavy but not extremely heavy. In Florida experiments, a single application of sulfentrazone at 0.5 lbs ai/acre provided good control of annual sedge as did bentazon and bentazon plus atrazine."
