Abstract/Contents:"A commercial turfgrass grade fertilizer (40-0-0, N-P-K) was screened into seven particle sizes ranging from 23 to 10,600 particles/g, and each impregnated with 3.28% ai oryzalin, 2.76% ai oxadiazon, 0.689% prodiamine, or 0.345% dithiopyr by weight. Treatments of 1120 to 6720 g ai/ha oryzalin or oxadiazon, 224 to 1680 g ai/ha prodiamine, or 14 to 840 g ai/ha dithiopyr were applied to common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] on March 13, 1995, prior to emergence of southern crabgrass [Digitaria ciliaris (Retz) Koel.]. The plots were seeded with 50 kg/ha southern crabgrass seed and total nitrogen was adjusted to 2240 g/ha for all treatments by addition of the same particle size and grade fertilizer with no herbicide. After treatment, the plot area was maintained at a mowing height of 3.5 cm. Southern crabgrass control ratings were made at 155 days after treatment. Acceptable control (≥80%) was achieved with ≥ 58 particles/g with oxadiazon, oryzalin, or dithiopyr, or ≥ 165 particles/g with prodiamine with normal use rates (3360 g/ha oryzalin or oxadiazon; 840 g/ha prodiamine or 560 g/ha dithiopyr). Overall, efficacy increased with reduced particle size at less than normal use rates."
