Abstract/Contents:"Plateau was evaluated for weed control in a bermudagrass highway rights-of-way turf in 1995. The experiment was designed as a split-plot with no mowing before or after herbicide treatment, mowing 2 weeks before or after herbicide treatment, or mowing 1 day before herbicide treatment as the main plots, and herbicide treatment as the sub-plots. Herbicide treatments were applied on June 23, 1995 and included 0.14 or 0.19 kg ai/ha Plateau, 3.96 kg ai/ha MSMA, 0.42 kg ai/ha Roundup (glyphosate), or 0.14 kg/ha Plateau tank-mixed with either 3.96 kg/ha MSMA or 0.42 kg/ha Roundup. Mowing height was 15 cm and was accomplished with a 1.5 m rotary clipper. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and a mowing by herbicide interaction occurred for control of johnsongrass, trumpetcreeper, and Illinois bundleflower at 8 WAT (weeks after treatment). Southern crabgrass, wild poinsettia, and tall fescue control at 8 WAT and bermudagrass injury at 4 WAT were averaged over mowing times. In all plots treated with Plateau and mowed 2 weeks before treatment, johnsongrass was controlled 80% or greater at 8 WAT. Any treatment mowed 1 day prior to herbicide application had 30% or less johnsongrass control at 8 WAT. The only treatments which controlled johnsongrass 80% or greater when mowed 2 weeks after treatment were Plateau tank-mixed with either MSMA or Roundup. Plateau at 0.19 kg/ha or 0.14 kg/ha Plateau tank-mixed with either MSMA or Roundup were the only treatments in the non-mowed plots to control johnsongrass 80% or greater at 8 WAT. Plateau performed poorly on trumpetcreeper when plots were mowed 1 day prior to herbicide application or not mowed at all. When plots were mowed 2 weeks prior or 2 weeks after 0.14 or 0.19 kg/ha Plateau was applied, 80% or greater trumpetcreeper control was observed at 8 WAT. To control Illinois bundleflower 80% or greater, treatments needed to contain Roundup and be mowed 2 weeks before or after herbicide applications or not mowed. Any treatment containing Plateau controlled tall fescue 85% or greater at 8 WAT. Roundup controlled tall fescue 74% 8 WAT, and MSMA resulted in no control. The only treatments which controlled southern crabgrass 80% or greater at 8 WAT were tank-mixes of Plateau with either Roundup or MSMA. Plateau or Roundup alone controlled southern crabgrass better than MSMA (57 to 70% compared to 21%). Plateau alone or tank-mixed with Roundup were the only treatments that controlled wild poinsettia 80% or greater 8 WAT. The highest injury to common bermudagrass was observed 4 WAT following treatment with a tank-mix of Plateau and Roundup. Injury was 24% and was greater than the injury from Plateau + MSMA, 0.14 kg/ha Plateau, Roundup, or MSMA (3, 11, 4, and 0% respectively)."
