Abstract/Contents: | The spiroplasma vectors Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolc.) and Euscelidius variegatus (Kirschb.) studied on maize and Lolium perenne in Norwich, United Kingdom, showed a high preference for phloem tissue. Of the feeding tracks on maize, 95% of those produced by D. maidis and 86.3% of those produced by E. variegatus ended in the phloem. The 2 species produced narrow single feeding tracks and wide branched tracks, respectively, and the second species also deposited large quantities of saliva in the phloem tissues. The response of the cicadellids to various concentrations of anions and cations resulted in the development of a particular feeding solution for each species. Other factors affecting feeding responses were the previous food-plant (maize or L. perenne), injection of the insects with spiroplasma growth medium and the presence in the feeding solution of foetal calf serum, aliphatic alcohols, diethyl ether, vinegar or penicillin. The significance of the feeding habits of the 2 species on their relative effectiveness as vectors of the spiroplasma causing corn stunt is discussed. |
