Abstract/Contents:In a pot trial, (a) perennial ryegrass (b) or white clover were grown in soils of low K contents, 5 with illite and 1 with smectite clays. K reserves ranged from 0.2 to 1.2 mg/100 g soil. DM production over 120 days ranged from 0.82 to 2.06 g/pot in (a) and 2.76 to 4.72 g/pot in (b) and absorbed K from (a) 21 to 51 mg/pot in (a) and 74 to 151 mg/pot in (b). In soils containing illite with different K saturation levels, K reserves decreased due to high extraction by the plants but not in soils with clays of high fixation capacity, smectite or expanded illites.
