Abstract/Contents:High seed rates are usually recommended for the establishment of sports turf although there are few experimental data to support this advice. In turf of L. perenne and P. pratense a 64-fold increase in seed density had no long term effect on shoot biomass but did cause increases in plant and tiller densities and decreases in average plant size, flower head density and the extent of invasion by clover. These results are discussed in relation to plant mortality within turf and the selection of seed rates for turf establishment according to the intended use. For most uses a seed rate of < 10 g/m2 would be adequate.
