Abstract/Contents:The factors affecting the ability of a turf seed mixture to produce a floristically rich, stable, hardwearing sward quickly and cheaply are discussed. Areas which receive a lot of wear are not suitable but a green plant cover all the year is not essential. Perennial species and cvs suitable for the locality should be chosen and the ground fertilized. Wild flower mixtures are expensive but many species will invade a sward if it is mown relatively infrequently. Poa pratensis cvs Baron, Alicija and Baroness produce a less open turf than Orna, Primo and Merion and Lolium perenne cvs Loretta and Majestic a less open turf than Caravelle and Gazon. Changes in the plant community 4 years after sowing a seed mixture and the effects of mulching on grass populations are tabulated.
