Abstract/Contents: | Variation in chiasma frequency and distribution at metaphase I was analysed in several plants of the variety S23 and their inbred descendants (S1-S5). The results showed that inbreeding reduced chiasma frequency and increased both between and within-cell bivalent variances. Evidence is presented for polygenic control of chiasma formation and distribution. A model is suggested for control of the interrelated components of chiasma variation (frequency and between and within-cell bivalent variances) which involves a common control system and independent systems. |
