Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to determine the optimum rate and fall timing for preemergence control of annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) with prodiamine. Treatements were applied to a mature stand of Kenblue Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). The site was heavily infested the previous spring with P. annua, but virtually all of the annual bluegrass died during the summer of each year. There was, however, a heavy smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum [Schreber] Schreber ex Muhlenb.) infestation at the site when treatments were applied each fall. Turf density was generally poor. Soil was a Chillum silt loam with a pH of 6.2 and 2.3% organic matter. Three rates of prodiamine (i.e., 0.32, 0.65, and 0.97 lb ai/A) were applied on three dates in 1995 and 1996 (i.e., 11 Aug, 14 Sept, and 13 Oct 1995; and 29 Aug, 16 Sept, and 30 Sept 1996; respectively). The site was irrigated within 24 hours of each application with at least 0.5 inches of water. Prodiamine was applied in 50 gallons of water per acre with a CO₂-pressurized (34 psi) backpack sprayer equipped with a 8004E flat-fan nozzle. Plots were 5 by 5 feet and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Percent of plot area covered by annual bluegrass or smooth crabgrass was assessed visually on a 0 to 100% linear scale where 0=no weeds and 100=entire plot area covered by weeds. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and significantly different means were seperated at P=0.05. Large numbers of annual bluegrass seedling were first noted emerging at the site on 3 Oct 1995 and 30 Sept 1996. All rates of prodiamine applied on either 11 Aug or 14 Sept 1995 or 29 Aug and 16 Sept 1996 significantly reduced annual bluegrass and produced statistically similar levels of control (0 to 7% annual bluegrass cover). All rates applied 13 Oct 1995, and 0.32 and 0.65 lb ai/A applied 30 Sept 1996 did not provide commercially acceptable annual bluegrass control. Smooth crabgrass levels were high in the summer of 1996, but not in 1997. Ratings from 1996 showed that prodiamine applied at 0.65 lb/A on 13 Oct, and 0.97 lb/A applied 14 Sept or 13 Oct 1995 provided excellent season-long smooth crabgrass control during the summer of 1996."
