Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted on a mixed stand of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and Poa annua at the Penn State Blue Golf course in State College, PA. The objective of the study was to evaluate selected growth regulators, with and without additional adjuvants, for the seedhead suppression of Poa annua. All of the treatments were applied on April 14, and, in some cases, April 25, 1997 using a three foot CO₂ powered boom sprayer calibrated to deliver 40 GPA using two 6504 nozzles at 30 psi. The turf was maintained using practices for irrigation, mowing, and fertilization that would be typical for a green. The green did not receive any aerification/topdressing prior to or during the study. Quality ratings taken on April 28, 1997 revealed that only turf treated with Surf-Side 37 at 4 oz/M and mefluidide Lite at 40 oz/A with a sequential treatment of Surf-Side at 4 oz/M two weeks later, and mefluidide Lite alone at 40 oz/A were significantly lower than the check. On May 6, 1997, with regard to quality, none of the treated turf was significantly lower than the check. However, as seedhead emergence became significant (by May 31), the quality of the check significantly declined (as seedhead suppression, or lack of, was incorporated into the quality rating). As a result, quality of each plot became a function of both seedhead suppression and color/discoloration. Overall, by lowering the mefluidide Lite rate to 35 oz/A, quality was significantly improved on April 28 without a significant loss in seedhead suppression. By adding 5 oz/M of Ferromec to the 40 oz/A rate of mefluidide Lite the quality was improved, but seedhead suppression tended to decrease. Adding either Surf-Side 37 or 199-B to the 40 oz/A rate of mefluidide Lite plus 5 oz/M of Ferromec effectively countered the antagonism of the mefluidide caused by Ferromec. This improvement in seedhead suppression was accomplished with a decrease in quality. Seedhead suppression by Surf-Side 37 and 199-B when applied alone was not found to provide acceptable seedhead suppression."
