Abstract/Contents:"Several experiments were conducted at the URI turf research facility and adjacent athletic fields on mixed turf containing Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and Chewing's fescue (Festuca rubra var. commutata) maintained at 1.75 inches. Randomized complete block designs with four replications were used. Plots were five feet wide by eight feet long with a two foot untreated strip between plots. Soils were Bridgehampton silt loams. Spray treatments were applied with a backpack sprayer in 48 GPA and granulars by a Gandy drop spreader. All rates are given in lb/A. Weed control ratings were on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being complete control and <7.0 being unacceptable. Turf injury ratings were also on a 0-10 scale, with 10 being perfect tolerance and <9.0 being objectionable. Weed stands were moderate-heavy. In experiment I preemergence treatments were applied on April 25 and sequential treatments at the early postemergence stage (2-leaf) were done on June 20. Barricade at 0.38, 0.5 and 0.65 lb/A applied preemergence gave essentally complete control for the 20 week evaluation period. Similar results were obtained with sequential treatments of 0.33 plus 0.17, 0.25 plus 0.25 and 0.42 plus 0.23 lb/A. Weed control with a preemergence treatment of Pendulum at 1.5 lb/A was rated at 9.4 after 20 weeks while a sequential treatment of 0.75 plus 0.75 lb/A was 10. Dimension EC at 0.25 lb/A preemergence was rated at 8.8 after 20 weeks. A 0.125 plus 0.125 sequential was 9.6 and a 0.25 plus 0.125 lb/A ws 10. Two formulations of Team were evaluated in experiment II. Preemergence treatments were on April 29 and the sequential applications on June 24. When applied sequentially at 1.5 plus 1.5 lb/A, both Team and Team Pro gave essentially complete control for 20 weeks while single pereemergence applications of 2.0 lb/A gave ratings of <8.5. Granular applications of pendimethalin at 2.0 lb/A preemergence or 1.5 plus 1.5 lb/A sequentially were rated at 7.0 and 8.8 respectively after 20 weeks. Single preemergence treatments of Dimension at 0.38 lb/A and Barricade at 0.5 lb/A (both as granulars) gave control ratings of 8.3 and 7.6 respectively, after 20 weeks. In a third experiment, Dimension was applied preemergence on April 23 and sequentially on June 17 as either a 1 or 2 lb/G EC or a series of granular loadings to provide equal particle densities/sq. ft. Single preemergence appliations of the 1 EC at 0.25 and 0.38 lb/A gave weed control ratings of 9.2 and 9.8 respectively, after 20 weeks. Similar applications of the 2 EC at 0.125 and 0.25 lb/A gave ratings of 7.6 and 8.0. Single applications of a granular at 0.125 and 0.25 lb/A were rated at 7.8 and 9.5 respectively, after 20 weeks. Sequential applications of granulars at 0.06 plus 0.06 or 0.125 plus 0.125 lb/A gave ratings of 9.8 and 10."
