Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were conducted on an established Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) stand to evaluate POST activity of several herbicides in large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control in 1993, 1994, and 1996. All treatments were applied to 3.5 by 10 ft. plots with a CO₂-backpack sprayer at a pressure of 22 psi in 50 gpa. POST treatments were applied to the 2- to 3-leaf stage (June 16, 1993) and to the 1- to 3-tiller stage (July 8, 1993) of crabgrass. In 1994, POST treatments were applied to 2- to 3-leaf stage (June 5, 1994) and to the 1- to 3-tiller stage (June 23, 1994) of crabgrass. In 1996, POST treatments were applied to the 2- to 3-leaf stage (June 24) and to the 1- to 3-tiller stage (July 9) of crabgrass. Turfgrass injury was rated on a scale of 0 to 100% (0 = no injury and 100 = dead turfgrass). Weed control was estimated on a scale of 0 to 100% (where 0 = no weed control and 100 = complete control) 4, 8, and 12 weeks after treatment (WAT). In 1993, the combination of fenoxaprop and pendimethalin at 0.1 + 1.5 lb/A gave 75% crabgrass control compared to only 32% control with fenoxaprop (0.1 lb/A) or pendimethalin (1.5 lb/A) alone. The similar combinations at 0.2 + 1.5 lb/A gave 97% control compared to 89% control with fenoxaprop (0.2 lb/A) alone. The combination of dithiopyr and MSMA (0.25 + 1.00 lb/A) provided 91% control compared to 67% control with dithiopyr alone, while the combination of fenoxaprop and MSMA at 0.125 +1.0 lb/A gave only 63% control. These treatment combinations, when applied at the 1- to 3- tiller stage, resulted in 70 to 80% control, except the combination of dithiopyr and MSMA (0.25 + 1.0 lb/A) which controlled large crabgrass over 95%. None of these treatments showed any objectionable injury to Kentucky bluegrass. In 1994, the combination of fenoxaprop at 0.1 or 0.2 lb/A with pendimethalin at 1.5 lb/A applied POST at the 1- to 2- tiller stage resulted in over 95% crabgrass control compared to only 75% control with fenoxaprop alone or 30% control with pendimethalin alone 6 WAT. All premix combinations of fexoxaprop and pendimethalin (3.09 EC) at 1.55 or 2.06 lb ai/A, applied at the 4- to 6-leaf stage of crabgrass controlled over 90% 7 WAT in 1996, while the lowest rate (1.03 lb/A) controlled only 73% of crabgrass. Application of these treatments at the 1- to 3-tiller stage of crabgrass resulted in slightly lower crabgrass control compared to the 4- to 6-leaf stage. The tank-mix combination of dithiopyr and fenoxaprop at 0.25 and 0.12 lb/A resulted in over 95% control of crabgrass 9 WAT. No injury to Kentucky bluegrass was observed with any of these treatments."
