Abstract/Contents:The biological control agents CAG-B(o) (BN-1) (a binucleate Rhizoctonia sp), TrBG (an isolate of Glicladium), and Gliocadium virens GL-21 were tested for their effectiveness in controlling brown patch disease. The other objective was to examine the effects of repeated applications of BN-1 and TrBg and various delivery methods for GL-21 on biocontrol efficacy. The plots were rated for brown patch severity every 2 weeks through Sept. using one of two methods. One was a visual assessment of percentage of turf exhibiting blight. When disease levels were low, i.e. less than 20% blight in the control plots, the extent of brown patch lesion development within the canopy was rated with 1 sq ft areas on a 0 to 10 scale (0= no lesions, 10=most severe). The disease did not develop to expected levels during much of the season due to abnormally low temperatures. Blight severity over entire plots could be assessed only on 5 Aug and 21 Aug when disease severity was at its peak. The most effective treatment during period of both high and low disease development was the combination of BN-1 and TrBg, which had a mean disease severity of 20% versus 33% in the nontreated control. TrBg reduced disease severity during one reading, with there being no difference between 1 and 3 applications. GL-21 did not control the disease regardless of the delivery method or rate.
