Abstract/Contents:The primary objective of this study was to compare nine cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), with canopy types of dwarf, medium, and tall, for their response to brown patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Another objecctive was to determine if cutting height had an effect on the development of brown patch in these cultivars. The disease did not develop to expected levels either year due to abnormally low temperatures. In 1991, there was a significant difference in blight severity between cutting heights with seasonal averages of 52 and 44 percent blight at the low and high cutting heights, respectively. However, blight due to brown patch was difficult to distinguish from canopy death due to other stress factors at the low cutting height. Therefore, the 1992 experiment was conducted at one height. In 1992, disease ratings were lowest on the first reading (9 Jul), with a mean rating of 3.3 over all cultivars. Overall mean ratings on six subsequent dates ranged from 4.9 to 6.1. In both years, KY-31 had the lowest level of disease development. There were no significant differences between medium and dwarf cultivars.
