Abstract/Contents:"The laboratory facilities at ATRI provide a range of technical services which assist in the maintenance of high quality sportsturf. [They] provide chemical, physical and biological analyses, interpretation and recommendations to enable [one] to act on the results. [In testing soil], pH and electrical conductivity (EC) are the most basic of the chemical tests provided. The pH test determines the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, and the EC test provides a useful guide to soil salinity. Both of these factors affect the availability of nutrients to plants. [Also,] the pH and EC tests can be combined with a test of the soil's phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) content." In addition nutrient analysis of soil and water and organic matters are also available. There are several physical tests that can also be made. Particle size" is also known as mechanical analysis and will determine what fractions of gravel, sand, silt, and clay make up [the] soil. It is the relationship between these fractions which will influence the performance of the soil... The drainage and compaction test quantifies problems which have been identified in the field and can be used as a basis for proposing suitable solutions." A profile wettability test is also available which" is useful for diagnosing Dry Patch - the manifestation of water repellency - on turf soils before it occurs." Biological tests for disease daignosis, nematodes, soil/seed germination, and weed/insect i.d. have also been made available" to provide turfgrass managers with suitable information for maintaining high quality sportsturf and for identification of specific problems."
