Abstract/Contents: | Problems which are a direct result of inadequate renovation "include insufficient cover of desirable turf, thatch accumulation, soil layering and poor root growth as a result of dense soils. Profile problems such as high soil density reflect the inability of the soil to resist compaction as a result of wide particle size distribution. This is quite common on those older greens or ovals which, because of financial constraints, really happened over time rather than being correctly constructed. Such situations are difficult to resolve and present difficulty for the turfgrass manager, especially if he was not involved in the original construction... No turf manager should ever be totally satisfied with the quality of the turf under his control. Knowing in what ways the present turfgrass sward quality falls short of your objectives is the first step to improvement. Only then can you seriously consider cultural practices and chemical amendments or pesticides. Renovation should not be habitual but on a need-to basis after investigation." Secondly, one should choose the methods of achieving these goals, such as using alternative machines, soil amendments, or various cultural practices. The third step is communication to the greens committee. After the actual implementation, the final step is the assessment of results and planning of the next renovation. |
