Abstract/Contents:The Sydney Cricket Sports Ground Trust tends to the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Sydney Football Stadium, and the Parramatta Stadium. "The aim of the turf manager is to provide an are on which the players can achieve satisfaction and in some cases provide entertainment for an audience. Should both sections be satisfied then the ground manager can take some pride in knowing that his efforts have been rewarded. It should be noted that the problems of maintaining sports facilities are not unique to any individual town or country. In fact the problems of preparing cricket pitches in such places as Bourke or Ballarat are the same as for Lords and the Sydney Cricket Ground in that the players will demand the perfect pitch. It is the word 'perfect' that seems to cause great drama for players and turf managers. As an ideal, perfection should be attempted but in practical terms, especially when dealing with nature, it need only be something to strive for. In striving for the ideal at the Sydney Cricket Ground we have the distinct advantage over the local turf manager of having a budget that would not normally be possible to most. It is because of this advantage that most expect the areas to be perfect. However, the higher the standard, the more sporting bodies wish to use them and then still expect the same standard. This is then creating what can be described as significant problems of maintaining turfgrass to the international standards."
