Abstract/Contents:"Procymidone is the active constituent of two ICI products - Sumisclex 275 Flocol and Sumisclex 500 wettable powder. It is an extremely potent organic fungicide with high activity against a wide range of plant pathogens. It is a member of the chemical group known as dicarboximides, as are two other compounds, iprodione (Rovral) and vinclozolin (Ronilan). Sumisclex is registered for the control of diseases of a wide range of fruit, vegetable and field crops, but until recently has not been used on turfgrass. It is paticularly active against 'higher fungi' in the class Ascomycetes, such as Sclerotinia spp. and Botrytis spp. It has no significant activity against water moulds e.g. Pythium spp. and Pytophthora spp. ICI Crop Care is developing Sumisclex as a fungicide for control of several disease problems in turfgrass, including Dollar Spot, Spring Dead Spot and Heminthosporium or 'Black Helmo'. The fungicide is not yet registered for any of these problems, and is therefore not available for use. Efficacy trials have been completed, however, and registration for dollar spot control is expected in 1990. ICI Crop Care is submitting for label extensions to include the other diseases." Field research was conducted on the efficacy and safety of Sumisclex sprays for control of turf disease by officers of the Australian Turfgrass Research Institute. "The results of these studies suggest that procymidone is an effective and safe fungicide for control of dollar spot and its performance against SDS and black helminthosprium suggests that it could find a useful place as a broad spectrum turf fungicide. It is better than iprodione and is far superior to thiram in controlling dollar spot and black helminthosporium. It is as good as thiram in controlling SDS while iprodione was ineffective against the disease. The slight phytotoxicity of procymidone to Colonial bentgrass at twice the proposed use rate is not likely to seriously limit the usefulness of procymidone for most turfgrass situations in Australia."
