| Abstract/Contents: | "It is proposed to discuss the quality control procedures adopted for sand/soil mixes used in premium sports turf situations. These situations include golf greens, bowling greens, intensive playing fields and race tracks. There is a distinct difference between the grade of material used by the industry in these applications and other situations viz soil mixes for nurseries, garden centers and filling purposes." Specifying a required pH range, tolerable salinity level, desirable particle grading distribution, preferred moisture holding and infiltration rates, and a minimum compaction ratio, are the responsibility of the Turfgrass Research Institute or the Golf Superintendents or Bowling Greenkeepers Association. The supplier's quality control responsibility includes the selection of raw material, the mixing of the raw materials, testing the sand/soil mix, and supervision of the mixing operation." The sportsturf industry is a small specialized user of sand/soil products. The drainage chacteristics and growing properties of these mixes are critical... The industry must educate and train greenkeepers to recognize the need to adhere to the accepted sand/soil standard." |
