Abstract/Contents:Data are presented comparing the growth of Agropyron repens and Agrostis gigantea in association with perennial ryegrass. In an indigenous field infestation where defoliation intervals of between 2 and 8 wks were compared, rhizome levels were contained by defoliation at less than 4-wk intervals. A 2- or 4-wk interval was recorded as being preferable to 8 wks in a subsequent experiment. The ability of A. gigantea to prosper at lower N levels than A. repens, as suggested in field data, was confirmed in an experiment where, with a nil nitrogen regime, A. gigantea with perennial ryegrass produced almost 3 times the rhizome DM of A. repens while, when 385 kg N/ha were applied, A. repens produced 4 times more rhizome DM than A. gigantea. From summary.
