| Abstract/Contents: | "Daily analysis of anther samples during flower development enabled an estimation of the duration of defined developmental periods in pollen of Phalaris tuberosa. A similar sequence of pollen development was established for ryegrass, Lolium perenne, where changes in activity, where changes in activity of wall enzymes were followed using quantitative cytochemical methods. Acid phosphate, an intine enzyme, showed 2 periods of activity: during the vacuolate period corresponding to deposition of the intine polysaccharides, and in the maturation period corresponding to cytoplasmic activity. Non-specific esterase showed greatest activity in the parietal tapetal cells until their dissolution early in the vacuolate period when an increase in pollen-associated activity occurred. These changes provided additional evidence for the transfer of tapetal proteins to exine sites." |
