Abstract/Contents:Discusses the problem of limited effort and resources being expended to identify or develop bermudagrass cultivars with the quality of creeping bentgrass. Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) is the best adapted species for putting greens in the warmer, more humid areas of the United States because of it's superior heat tolerance and ability to recuperate under low mowing heights. Soon after TIFGREEN was released, many off-types followed, but the only one to become established in the trade was TIFDWARF. Turf managers continually report that there is variance between TIFGREEN and TIFDWARF greens, but there has been little or no interest from researchers to pursue this topic. The objective of this research was to evaluate bermudagrass cultivars or their TIFGREEN TIFDWARF off-types on a USGA green and a native sandy loam. In conclusion to the experiment, variants of TIFDWARF showed differences in phenotypic behavior, and some of these ecotypes show promise as putting green grasses. TIFGREEN did not hold up as well under a mowing height of 1/8 inch, as did many other grasses.
