Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to evaluate the visual quality of bentgrass cultivars maintained on USGA sand-based or native soil root-zones. In 1994, 28 bentgrass cultivars were established on a native Batavia silt loam soil and on a USGA sand-based green in Wisconsin. Visual quality, disease and pest incidence ratings were recorded monthly. A-1 and A-4 of the Penn series produced upright, high shoot density turf that will provide championship conditions. Synthetic materials from a Texas A&M program performed in the top 20% of all sand-based green cultivars. Penncross and Providence provided consistent quality regardless of environmental conditions, root-zone and pest infestations.
