| Abstract/Contents: | "Asocarp formation in Claviceps purpurea (ergot) was prevented by either 1-(4-chlorophenoxy)-3, 3-dimethyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-butanone (Bay Meb 6447), α -(2-chlorophenyl)-α-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol (fenarimol), or α-(2-chlorophenyl)-α-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-pyrimidinemeth (nuarimol) applied once over cold-conditioned sclerotia from Lolium perenne at 1 to 1.5 mg a.i./92 cm2 soil surface in plastic pots. Sprays and granular formulations of Bay Meb 6447 and nuarimol applied once in field plots of L. perenne at 1 to 3.25 and 1 to 2.1 kg a.i./ha, respectively, gave incomplete control. Ascocarp formation was prevented by sodium azide at 6 mg/92 cm 2 in several greenhouse pot tests. Sodium azide at 11.2 kg a.i./ha in a 15% granular formulation applied April 29 or May 11 prevented ascocarp formation through June 15. Sodium azide represents the first successful chemical for control of ergot in grass fields or grain crops by suppression of ascocarp formation." |
