Abstract/Contents: | The effects of NPK fertilizer application, types of mulching and sowing dates on the field germination of seed of 4 native grasses (a) Themeda australis, (b) Bothriochloa macra, (c) Danthonia spp. and (d) Stipa bigeniculata are reported. Growth of these species in controlled environments was compared with that of (e) perennial ryegrass at 3 temp. regimes and 2 levels of nutrition. Fertilizer application had no effect on emergence or survival of the native grasses in the field. Mulching with paper or straw increased emergence of all 4 native species and mulching with bitumen increased emergence of (a) and (c) seed only, but decreased survival of the 2 latter species. In both field and controlled environments, germination and seedling growth of (a) and (b) were best when max. daily temp. were )30 deg C, whereas (c) and (d) germinated and grew most satisfactorily when max. daily temp. were about 25 deg . Growth of seedlings of (d) in a controlled environment was enhanced by a high level of nutrition but growth of the other species was not. Sowing seed in late spring and using a straw mulch should ensure satisfactory levels of establishment of native grass seedlings in the field in SE Australia. Fertilizer application should not be necessary. |
