Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes the extensive damage that the weather phenomenon, refered to as El Niño, caused starting in late 1997 and throughout the early months of 1998. From California to Texas, and from Florida into the Carolinas, the storm left it's biggest marks. The place hit the hardest was the California coastline, leaving economic hardship on golf courses. The resort clubs suffered devastating losses, but so did non-resort courses. One course, Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz, reported the following losses: Green fees, $250,000; Cart fees, $6,000; Merchandise, $30,000; Food, $10,000; and Lessons, $2,500. The effects of El Niño will continue for the rest of the summer. Precipitation will be high compared to normal, which is almost nothing. In addition the golf equipment industry is taking hits from the damages the storms have caused,..."if people aren't playing golf, they aren't buying golf balls either". |
