Abstract/Contents:"Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is a common problem weed in turf. Although commercial herbicides are available for crabgrass control, the search for new herbicides or new use of existing herbicides continues. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted at the Turf Research Farm, University of Masachusetts to examine the potential preemergence activity of butachlor in established turf. The area was heavily infested with crabgrass. Granular (G) and emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulations of butachlor at 5.6, 8.4, and 11.2 kg/ha and DCPA at 11.2 kg/ha were tested. All initial treatments were applied preemergence on April 19, 1982. Sequential applications of each herbicide 6 and 9 weeks after initial application were also evaluated. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Weed control ratings were made 4 and 12 weeks after the initial application. Turf quality and phytotoxicity were evaluated 2, 4, and 12 weeks after initial application. Regardless of the formulation, butachlor provided excellent crabgrass control. No significant differences among various rates were found at early ratings. However, the lowest rate of butachlor was less effective 12 weeks after the application. After 12 weeks of growth, sequential application of butachlor did not show any added advantage over the initial application. Phytotoxicity was evident only with butachlor EC, and the maximum phytotoxicity (50%) was observed with the highest rate. However, the injury to the turf was completely recovered after 2 weeks of growth. Turf quality was consistently acceptable over the growing season. DCPA, used as the standard crabgrass control treatment, provided excellent control with no injury. The results identify the potential use of butachlor as a preemergence crabgrass control herbicide. Further field studies are needed to evaluate the residual effects on turf species."
