| Abstract/Contents: | In order to ascertain the exact effects and possible benefits that a dense root system has of the shear resistance of a given surface, an experiment was conducted on various surfaces with differing grass species with roots growing to varying depths. "A clipping box implement [Kastenschergeräte=Shearing machine] with a clipping width [shearing width] of 500 mm by 500 mm is depicted, which is used for measuring the [shearing strength] "in situ" on soils thoroughly overgrown with grass roots. Comparisons are made between the results of tests carried out in 1983 with intensively managed turf and extensively managed red fescue and framework [shearing] experiments ([shearing] area 36 cm2). The spreading of the roots was obvivus [obvious] in a depth of 15 cm by a visible enlargement of the internal angle of friction and the cohesion. The intensively managed turf shows in a depth of 15 cm, a smaller [shear resistance] than the landscape turf. The measured internal angles of friction of the implements are in good correspondence in a depth from 12.2 cm up to 17.6 cm and supplement each other." It is concluded that areas with a well established root system are more shear resistant, but the exact depth at which the benefits of the root system begin to diminish has not yet been established. |
