Abstract/Contents:Contamination by Pb and Cd in a 16-km2 area near Biebesheim was monitored using Italian ryegrass plants exposed for 1-4 months, leaf samples from sugarbeet crops and soil samples. The existence of a source of Pb emission in the area was confirmed. There was a distinct increase in Pb contamination during the growing season. Pb accumulation was greater at a ht. of 1.5 m than at 0.3 m and was similar in ryegrass and sugarbeet at 1.5 m. The permitted level of 40 p.p.m. Pb was exceeded in only a few cases. Cd contents of plant samples showed little variation over the area and the existence of a source of Cd emission was excluded. Pb distribution in components of the food web was also studied.
