| Abstract/Contents: | "The experiment was conducted on the left side of #14 fairway at Hinckley Hills golf course in Hinckley, OH (Medina Co.). Since we were looking for complete control of the larvae, the test consisted of Oftanol applied once (19 Apr), and diazinon applied 1, 2, or 3 times. Thatch accumulation was 0.75 to 1.25 inches, and air temperature at treatment time was 50 degrees F on 19 Apr, 63 degrees F on 2 May, and 51 degrees F on 15 May. the larvae were third instars. The experimental design was a RCB with 4 replicates. Individual plots were 10 X 12 ft. The granular material was applied with a cyclone rotary broadcast spreader. Liquid applications were made using a John Bean centrifugal pump sprayer with three 11005 Teejet nozzles mounted on a boom, operating at full throttle with a 100 ml per second spray rate, at 100 gal water pre acre. Rain (0.65 inches) occurred 3 days after first treatment, 1.64 inches 1 day after second treatment and 0.3 inches 4 days after third treatment. Surviving larvae were sampled 29 days after the last treatment (55 days after the first treatment) by cutting five 7 X 7 X 3-inch deep plugs into each 10 X 12 ft plot. Oftanol and the multiple applications of diazinon gave the very high degree of control desired in this test. Multiple applications of diazinon did not cause phytotoxicity of the turf." |
