Abstract/Contents:An organic soil from NE Spain had a high capacity to absorb Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn. After the addition of these trace elements, the soil was bioassayed with Lolium multiflorum. Germination was reduced by 17% and vegetative growth stunted. Cr was the metal which showed the highest absorption (90% in 30 days) by the organic soil. Zn showed the lowest absorption, being practically at the same level as that found in the plant (150 p.p.m.). The Lakanen and Ervio method for extracting heavy metals from soils gave reliable measurements on the level of trace elements available for L. multiflorum.
