| Abstract/Contents: | In a field trial Italian ryegrass swards were given 0, 60, 120, 180 or 240 kg N/ha as calcium cyanamide or ammonium sulphate on 19 May, 2 or 17 June and Eleusine coracana was oversown into the sward 3 days later. The best growth and establishment of E. coracana were given by application of 240 kg N and sowing on 20 June. The survival of the Italian ryegrass decreased with increasing rate of calcium cyanamide and the highest rate caused withering and decreased chlorophyll content and root activity. In a pot trial E. coracana was oversown in Italian ryegrass given 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 or 0.6 g N/pot as calcium cyamide or ammonium sulphate and grown at 18, 23, 28 or 33 deg C. Growth and establishment of E. coracana increased with increasing rate of calcium cyanamide which also suppressed growth of ryegrass at high rates. Establishment was improved at temp. ) 28 deg . |
