Abstract/Contents:Increasing production of animal manure by intensive livestock rearing systems has necessitated an efficient means of manure disposal, by application on agricultural land, without resulting in environmental pollution. Treatment of manure by separation of coarse grained contaminants followed by homogenising and chemical-biological treatments produces a manure containing large amounts of N, and separated sludges rich in both N and P. The high fertilizer value of treated manure and separated sludges was demonstrated in field experiments using Italian ryegrass and maize. Optimum rates of manure application were calculated to satisfy, but not exceed, crop requirements for N, thus precluding contamination of groundwater. The amount of nitrates and phosphates which penetrated to underground waters did not exceed losses from mineral fertilizers.
