Abstract/Contents:In experiments with Italian ryegrass, leaf photosynthetic rate was high in seedlings in autumn and at growth in spring. During winter the rate of photosynthesis was correlated with av. daily air temp. for 10 days before the measurement. Dark respiration was higher in winter than in other seasons. In cocksfoot the rate of photosynthesis was highest in spring followed by in autumn. In spring, photosynthetic rates were correlated with the av. daily air temp. during 10 days before the measurement. In both spp., photosynthetic rate in winter was highest at 3-5 wk after full leaf expansion and decreased gradually with age. In spring and summer, photosynthetic rate was highest at 1-2 wk after full expansion then declined rapidly. Rates were higher in upper than in lower leaves at light intensities of 60 or 20 klx, but not at 7 klx except in Italian ryegrass in May. Treatment at -4 deg C for 48 h seriously decreased photosynthetic activity and -6 deg for 48 h abolished it. Pretreatment at 10 deg for 1 wk enabled complete recovery from treatment at -2 deg for 48 h. Activity was not affected by 2 deg for 48 h.
