Abstract/Contents:Until recently many thought there was only one way to remove sod from turf in order to start a garden - by hand with a garden spade. That is not true anymore. There are actually three effective ways to remove sod: 1) Muscle and sweat, the spade; to use a spade it takes a strong back and knees and a lot of muscle, but it is also simple and effective. You simply cut a border of the sod you wish to remove and then thrust the spade right under the sod to detach it from the soil. 2) A vibrating blade, the sod cutter; this is for when you are removing a large quantity of turf. The blades move very rapidly so it cuts right at the grass roots. These machines are available for rent at equipment shops for approximately $60. The drawbacks of the sod cutter are that it is very heavy (about 300 lds.) and does not cut anything except a straight line. 3) Chopping tines: the tiller; This machine has rotating tines that chop the sod into pieces. This way you do not have to cart the sod away you can work it into the soil. These are also available for rent (about $50 a day). The tiller is easier to maneuver than the sod cutter, but it is still bulky and can not not do small places or sharp corners. "When deciding which tool is appropriate for turning a piece of your lawn into garden, consider the size of the border-to-be and the lay of your land."
