| Abstract/Contents: | Establishment of grasses oversown without tillage was investigated in pot and field trials. In Bahia grass oversown in Italian ryegrass at soil temp. of 18, 23, 28 or 33 deg C, growth and establishment of Bahia grass were best at the highest temp. When Italian ryegrass was oversown in Bahia grass at soil temp. of 15, 20, 25 or 30 deg , establishment and growth of Italian ryegrass were best at 20 deg . In sol. culture at 18, 23, 28 or 33 deg the 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride reduction and respiration rate of roots increased at high temp. in Bahia grass and at low temp. in ryegrass. In Bahia grass, Rhodes grass and Dallis grass sown into Italian ryegrass on 20 May or 5 or 20 June, establishment was best when soil temp. was )25 deg . Rhodes grass showed more rapid early growth and greater root activity than Bahia grass or Dallis grass. Italian ryegrass was easily established in swards of the other spp. at temp. (20 deg . |
