Abstract/Contents: | The coexistence of the grass spp. Avena fatua, Italian ryegrass and Bromus mollis in California annual grassland was investigated. Growth and phasing of growth were similar in the 3 spp. throughout the season. It was concluded that A. fatua maintained dominance because of its large seeds and seedlings, but was unable to exclude the other spp. at the prevailing soil N level. Growth in nutrient sol. indicated that ryegrass and B. mollis had greater capacities for growth at low nutrient levels than A. fatua. The interaction between ryegrass and B. mollis depended on nutrient and temp. conditions. |
