Abstract/Contents:A 3-yr study was conducted on Tavares sand (Typic Quartzipsamment, hyperthermic, uncoated) to determine the soil's effectiveness in removing P from secondary-treated sewage effluent used for irrigation at the rate of 5 cm/week. Crops grown during the 3-year period included sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), and Coastcross-1 bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) (L.) Pers.). Soil solution samples drawn from depths of 30, 60, 90, 120, and 400 cm showed a relatively large increase in P to the 120-cm depth during the first year. However, at the 400-cm depth, which was below a cemented, spodic-like horizon, no P was detected during the 3-year period. The soil P in the top 60 cm increased from 6.0 ppm to 11.1 ppm after 3 years of irrigation. During the same period, soil K increased from 6.5 ppm to 11.5 ppm. The sewage effluent appeared to supply sufficient N, P, K for normal plant growth during the 3-year period after an initial lag of 2 or 3 months. It was concluded that this soil was capable of removing significant quantities of P from sewage effluent and that the effluent could sustain plant growth.
