| Abstract/Contents: | "Yard waste placed at curbside for collection and disposal in urban and suburban areas of Gainesville, FL was sampled, weighed, separated into categories; its composition was determined. Data collected in May and June 1994 and 1995 included weight and percent solids of grass clippings, leaves, woody and shrubbery trimmings, weeds, and soil in bags, cans, and piles placed at curbside during weekly yard trash collection. Between 1/4 and 1/3 of the yard waste collected consisted of deciduous tree leaves and pine needles. Grass clippings made up a similar portion of the waste in recently-developed neighborhoods but very little of that from older neighborhoods where shrubs were larger and trees more abundant. Woody waste accounted for almost half of the yard waste tonnage in older neighborhoods. An average of 10% of yard waste weight consisted of soil discarded with leaves and weeds. Moisture contents were found to be about 60% for grass and weeds and 35% for leaves and woody trimmings." |
