Abstract/Contents:"Twelve species of landscape ornamentals reported as tolerant of salt were transplanted just behind the sand dunes and about 0.2 km inland in Indiatlantic, FL. Plants were transplanted from 10.2 liter containers in mid-July 1993 and irrigated daily the first month, 3 times weekly the second month, and then twice weekly for an additonal 6 months. Each plant was periodically evaluated as living or dead until Jan. 1995. Quantities of salt deposited on leaves were estimated weekly using sea spray collectors. A few tree and shrub species were successful inland. Although all beach side plants eventually died, two tree species and one shrub showed promise for beach side planting if supplementally irrigated. Salt deposition varied weekly and was surprising[ly] low at the beach side planting most of the year. During storms, salt deposition was 3 to 4 times higher inland than frequently measured at the beach side planting."
