Abstract/Contents:Describes two experiments conducted at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station on the use of municipal solid waste (MSW) compost as a soil amendment in nursery tree production. The effects of compost use on first-year tree mortality, weed control, and tree growth were examined. First-year mortality of red and sugar maples was lower when compost was used, while mortality of white pine seedlings was higher when compost was used. There was no difference in mortality of pin oaks grown with or without compost. Plots treated with compost had fewer weeds than untreated plots, though more weeds than herbicide treated plots. Red and sugar maples grew significantly more when treated with compost; pin oaks grew less when treated with compost, but differences were not significant; and white pines showed no differential growth response to compost use.
