| Abstract/Contents: | In lysimeter trials in 1975-6 near Pisa (a) Italian ryegrass alone or with (b) red clover was grown (c) without N, with (d) ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate or (e) urea-formaldehyde; all treatments received equal doses of 100 kg each of P2O5 and K2O/ha. Total DM production was in the order (a) + (b) + (d) ) (a) + (c) ) remaining (a) + (b) treatments. Total protein content (g/plant) of (b) + (c) was significantly ) (a) + (b) + (c) which in turn was significantly ) (a) + (c). ) 90% of (d) and ( 10% of (e) was utilized by (a) in yr 1. N losses through leaching occurred in the winter and were equal to 22% and 10% of the quantity applied at sowing for (d) and (e), resp. During the growth period N losses occurred only when (b) was grown alone. |
