Abstract/Contents:Five varieties and three strains grown under natural conditions in late autumn and in a phytotron could be classified into two groups according to their maturity. For a particular specific leaf area (SLA), the five diploids had a higher net assimilation rate (NAR) than the three tetraploids. At low temperatures, for a particular dry-matter (DM) percentage of the stem, the tetraploids had a higher percentage of water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and a lower percentage of total nitrogen (TN) in the stem than diploids. DM percentage in the stem at 30 days at 20 and 25 deg C was lower in tetraploids than in diploids. The varieties and strains with a high tolerance to snow had a relatively high NAR, with a low SLA and leaf weight ratio under each temperature treatment. They also had relatively high DM percentages in the stem, high WSC and low TN percentages of leaf and stem under natural conditions and at 15 deg C. It is suggested that DM and WSC percentages of the stem of plants at the five-leaf or six-leaf stage grown under low temperatures may be useful as an index of snow tolerance.
