Abstract/Contents: | When an isolate of L. nodorum from wheat was used to inoculate Lolium multiflorum, Phleum pratense and Bromus sterilis for 0-7 passages, virulence to the alternative hosts increased and that to the original wheat decreased. A reduction of 89%, 44% and 30% was found for the incubation periods of the pathogen on L. multiflorum, P. pratense and B. sterilis, respectively. The rate at which virulence changes appears to depend, at least in part, on the original level of susceptibility of the alternative host. Evidently the grasses used in this study may, under field conditions, act as sources of inoculum for wheat crops. |
